Description
GORGEOUS ANTIQUE SILVER JEWISH HAMSE NECKLACE FROM MOROCCO BRING COLOUR INTO YOUR LIFE ! You are bidding for a rare silver necklace from Morocco dating from the end of 1800's - beginning of 1900's. This necklace's main pendant is a silver Hamse (or Fatima's Hand) and is the work of Jewish silversmiths. The hamse is an amulet that protects the wearer from evil eye and illnesses. Just above the Hamse there are four Mauritanian amber beads. The necklace is made coral branches (symbolizing beauty and youth and believed to staunch bleeding) and of an array of trade beads available at that time in the area. (millefioris, wound glass, chevrons, etc). Among the beads are cornerless engraved silver beads. At the top there are silver beads with dark blue enamel spaced by ebony beads inlaid with silver copper and brass. The combination of these three metals is thought to balance the energy of the body. This kind of necklace was given as a wedding present from the groom to the bride. The necklace has been recently re-stringed with all its original beads. The necklace weights 380gr. , the length incl. the woolen cord is 84cm (33"1/4), the necklace without the cord measures 50cm (19"3/4) and the height of the Hamse is is 8cm (3"1/8).
