The dates of the Morgan silver dollars include 1884, 1881, 1900 and 3 silver dollars made in 1921. The dates on the dimes include some silver dimes from the early 1940s, so this necklace was probably made in the early 1940s in the Navajo Reservation Area, which is generally the vicinity of the Arizona/New Mexico border. The silver dollars have been domed, then joined to the necklace by an attached silver bale. The beads are each made from two domed dimes, connected together, then a hole drilled through the center of the dimes for the rope to pass through. The craftmanship is extremely fine, the joining of the silver edges and joints are not obvious. The large, sandcast center naja (which means crescent) features a bright turquoise stone with silver at the top, with 10 perfectly matched hand-tooled crescents down to the tips of the naja. The fantastic, historical necklace is in outstanding condition with a lovely patina which we would expect from 50 years of aged silver. This was purchased from the estate of a San Francisco woman who was the original buyer in the forties on her Southwestern travels. An identical necklace was displayed recently in the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco. This amazing necklace measures 15.5" in length from the bottom of the naja to the top of the beads' neck closure. The naja itself is 3"h x 2.75"w at the widest crest. There is no signature on this necklace, as is usually the case with these early works of silver art by the Navajos. Please email any questions.
