One is for flat items and the other settup is for curved surfaces.The machine is shown with the curved setup that can engrave on curved or domed items. The picture of the sepeate arm setup is for the setup that is for flat things. But with the curved setup you can still do flat items as well as curved and domed items.Youi can also increase or decrease the size of the ingraving with adjustment also.This is a very precise machine and has many variables settings that can be used. Very compact in design and very well built and very accurate.This machine will work with all the different letter stencil settups that are used by hermes and thew other ingravers.
