Description
WILFORD'S TRADING POST Wilford's Jewelry Buying Journal Buy Direct from Gallup, New Mexico = The Indian Jewelry Capital of the World Description: Sterling Silver Tobacco/Brandy Canteen Artist Name: Harry Morgan (Navajo) Signed: yes, as "H. Morgan" see image Size: 4 inches in diameter / larger version Weight: 8 ounces Wilford Says: I love finding these museum-worthy pieces to offer for sale. These are hard to find although 100 yrs ago they were commonly made by the Navajo for soldiers and for their own personal use. However, most of those were simple and often of nickle silver. I have seen them refered to also as canteens and brandy flasks, but the attached double braded wire is the give-away. It is a pipe cleaner. I'm also putting up a smaller version. Harry Morgan is apparently not producing anymore. He is legendary as modern day silversmith on the reservation. I found an equivalent work by Harry Morgan is selling in a Southwest Gallery for $1650.00, but with the exception of the smaller version I have listed in my ebay store and one I found in Santa Fe, I've not seen any other ones for sale. Sometime before 1895 Edward E. Ayer collected the first documented silver canteen called a "silver bottle". I'm on the lookout for one of the very old pieces. But as for this modern one by Harry, I can see it featured on the PBS "Antique Road Show" 25 yrs from now. Too bad it's not a $12 garage sale item. 7/13/07: Harry who had been reported to be in poor health for a long time passed away today. He is a legendary silversmith so I expect all his work will not be considered as collector pieces. I'm told these are technically one of the most difficult pieces to make for any silversmith. That explains their rarity in part. All the Harry Morgan products at one of Gallup's was taken off the shelves this month after notice of Harry's death. His work is expected to appreciate considerably in value. If you find the Harry Morgan flask is over your budget, you might consider a less expensive alternative: see Sterling Silver Canteen/Flask . 9/1/07 I recently received a tip and was able to acquire a few Harry Morgan bracelets you can find up for sale in my ebay store. I never new Harry myself, but he must have been a fine gentleman. Every trader I've met really iiked the man.
