Description
Ladies and Gentlemen, offered for sale in this auction is one of the most usual pocket watches in the entire world. It is worthy of the absolute finest collections and is also totally unique and here to for unknown in the world of horology. The watch is signed “Breguet A Paris”. (Before you start sending me e-mails informing me that Breguet never made any watches signed Berget A Paris, please understand I have had the watch very well researched and do not want to get into arguments concerning the signature.) With this watch, it matters little who signed it as the mechanism by itself stands alone. The watch is circa 1780-1790 and is possibly of Swiss origin because of the complexity and extremely fine workmanship. In all of the watch collecting world no one has ever seen, nor is there any reference to any pocket watch with the unique complications this watch possesses. If you study the photographs closely you will find that the watch has hour/minute, seconds and date complications/dials, along with these complications it is also a quarter repeater. However, the most unusual complication and the one no one has ever seen the like of, is the left side movement that consists of a half globe of the earth toped by a wavy hand and one hand that possesses what appears to be the moon and all rotate on a fine enameled sub dial that has the sun and 6 other planets painted onto it. The northern hemisphere of the earth is finely detailed enamel and shows Europe, Russo/Asia, and even North America in different colors. The earth rotates once in 24 hours and the wavy hand (see photograph) revolves 12 times in 24 hours. And the moon revolves independently of these two. Yes the wavy hand is a replacement hand and most experts feel it should be replaced with a suitable gold hand. I have sent photographs to, and had many horologist and astronomers look at it and try to discern what the movement indicates. The best consensus at this time is that it tells the rising and setting of the cardinal planets and the position of the moon relative to the earth. It also shows the period of night and day relative to the effigy of the sun painted on the dial in relation to the globe. However, no one knows for sure what some of the complication measures. The only losses to this watch aer the wavy hand that moves over the globe and the bell/chime is missing a piece and is cracked and there are very slight loses to the edge of the enamel dial. ( see photographs) Two of these are easy to have repaired, and the enameled dial needs nothing done to it, as you cannot see the losses with the case closed. The verge movement runs beautifully to the full length of the fusee chain and was recently professionally cleaned, tuned and inspected. It is in wonderful over all condition for it’s age. Here is a chance for you to own a watch that is totally unique in the world. Though it is expensive it would probably bring a much greater value at a world-class international auction after all the research is completed on it. Consider, the finest museums in the world do not possess a pocket watch that even approaches this one for oddity of movement. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at 360-920-6311 and I will be happy to send photographs of any detail you need and will surely answer any questions you may have. Inspection is possible in Bellingham Washington at buyer’s expense. If you do call please be a serious principle inquiry.
